Coughlin ‘not necessarily’ finished coaching as Giants eye future role
Bill Belichick said Tom Coughlin, who resigned as New York Giants head coach yesterday, should be proud of his entire coaching career.
New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin answers questions during a news conference after the Giants lost 35-30 to the Philadelphia Eagles in an NFL football game, in East Rutherford, N.J. Sunday.
After twelve years and 2 Super Bowls, Coughlin met with John Mara and Steve Tisch to inform them it was in the best interest of the organization to move on. In an emotional, inspiring exit, Coughlin thanked just about every member – past and present – in the Giants organization, spoke about the right ways to play football and got choked up briefly as he looked back on 12 seasons with the team.
Specifically, Mara pointed toward general manager Jerry Reese as the man to shoulder much of the responsibility for turning the Giants around after a second straight 6-10 finish.
Coughlin posted a 110-93 record in 12 seasons with the Giants, winning three division titles in addition to his two league crowns.
“Winning, losing, playing hard, playing well, doing it for each other, winning the right way; winning the right way is a very, very important thing to me and all of our coaches”, Coughlin said.
But Coughlin, who won two Super Bowl championships during his reign as coach of the Giants, showed he still had the spirit to continue despite a 2015 campaign marked by a string of close losses.
Coughlin finished with a 102-90 record in the regular season and 8-3 in the postseason. “I think he’s done a great job, and he definitely has not failed”. He famously instituted “Coughlin Time” around the facility, a practice in which clocks are set five minutes ahead so that players and staff were in their seats early and ready to go for meetings. The Associated Press’ cameras caught Manning tearing up during the moment. “I know we’ve put together championship teams before. He’s done it before, he’ll handle it again”, Coughlin said. “We’ve had a good run, could’ve been better, obviously, but I appreciate everything he’s done for me”.
My personal choice would be offensive coordinator, Ben McAdoo. But two Super Bowls; well that guarantees quite the legacy.
That being said, the pressure is on Manning to lead the Giants into the future as he’s now the elder statesman on roster.
“We all know when we get in the business that we need to get off of the train sometime”, Parcells said while appearing on ESPN.
