Obama’s move may deter some weapon sales over the Internet
Obama was emotional as he recalled mass shootings around the USA during his announcement.
President Obama speaks from the East Room of the White House Tuesday about steps his administration is taking to reduce gun violence.
“Since Missouri repealed a law requiring comprehensive background checks and purchase permits, gun deaths have increased to nearly 50 percent higher than the national average”, Obama said in impassioned remarks at the White House.
“…from every family who never imagined that their loved one would be taken from our lives by a bullet from a gun, every time I think about those kids it gets me mad”, he said. His executive action requires background checks for many more gun sales.
But at gun shows, on websites and at flea markets, sellers can often skirt that requirement by declining to register as licensed dealers. Luwikowski said this is a good move because that way you know a background check has been done.
“Those are factors that are already being considered by courts”, he said. They must be shipped to a FFL [Federal Firearms Licensed dealer] where you then go, fill out a 4473 [Firearm Transaction Record], get your background check, and if cleared you can take it home.
Some in North Central Florida are saying president Obama’s plan to tighten gun control in the United States is far from flawless. “Not to debate the last mass shooting, but to do something to prevent the next one”, said President Obama.
President Barack Obama took gun control into his own hands Tuesday, issuing an executive order to expand background checks to crack down on gun violence across the country.
On Tuesday, however, it became clear that the president’s plan was more of a clarification of existing laws rather than new regulations.
Black, who is also a member of the Congressional Sportsmen’s Caucus, told TheBlaze that as a grandmother and mother she is “as sickened as anyone” by any person who commits any act of gun violence – which is why she has a handgun carry permit. “We maybe can’t save everybody, but we could save some”.
Leading Republicans predictably -and pathetically – mocked the president’s intentions. I believe in the Second Amendment.
In Congress, Democrats and Republicans similarly lined up on opposite sides.
Chuck James, a former federal prosecutor who practices firearms law at the firm Williams Mullen, said opponents are likely to challenge Obama’s authority to define what it means to be “engaged in the business” of selling guns beyond what’s laid out in the law.
“We’re putting more and more infringement and more restrictions on law-abiding citizens, when the real problem is this criminal element”. That didn’t stop GOP House Speaker Paul Ryan from offering the feeble parry that Obama’s “words and actions amount to a form of intimidation that undermines liberty”.
