Sky Sports clips near-live digital rights for Premier League
Sky has sealed a significant three-year digital deal with the Premier League to serve up “near live” clips of major incidents from the season after next including, obviously, the goals.
Sky says the three year deal starts in time for the 2016/17 season, and covers provision to its “mobile and online” users.
Up to 35m users a month access Sky Sports’ digital media services and Sky Sports for Mobile is the country’s most downloaded sports content app.
“For pubs it’s the ultimate competition for drawing a crowd, and I love the thought of loads of fans packing their local to watch Gary, Jamie and myself on Monday Night Football with the real Premier League trophy by their side. The way people watch sport is changing rapidly and this agreement ensures Sky Sports will continue to offer the best coverage across TV, mobile, online and social media”, said Managing Director of Sky Sports Barney Francis in a statement.
Mike Darcey, CEO of News United Kingdom, said: “We are delighted to be teaming up with Sky Sports for this exclusive distribution partnership, which gives us the green light to continue bringing Premier League clips to our engaged customers for another three years”.
At the last auction the rights were sold for GBP5.13 billion, significantly increased from the GBP3 billion paid at the previous auction, with Sky securing five of the seven packages available for GBP1.32 billion a year.
