Cole Miller’s friends in emotional vigil after fatal blow
“Along with the entire community, I send my deepest condolences to Cole’s family and friends at this terribly hard time”.
Armstrong Renata and Daniel Jermaine Lee Maxwell faced court charged with unlawful striking causing death on Tuesday, a day after the 18-year-old’s life support was switched off. But I would never have thought it would be the last.
Scores of people have flooded Renata’s profile, bombarding post comment threads with extremely vitriolic language – lambasting the 21 year-old for his alleged role in Miller’s tragic death.
Photographs on Renata’s Facebook page, shared across the internet by Mr Miller’s devastated friends include one of his arm tattoo which reads: “Sometimes you have to forget what’s gone, appreciate what still remains and look forward look forward to what’s coming next”.
Paying tribute to fallen teenager Cole Miller were chaplains who had been by his side after the alleged attack, including Chris Owens.
The Courier Mail reported that Maxwell moved to Logan from Melbourne three months ago and is living with his cousin and uncle. It is understood his parents still live in Auckland.
Renata and Maxwell have both been remanded to reappear in Brisbane Magistrates Court to face charges over Cole Miller’s death on February 8.
Detectives initially believed as many as four men could be behind Cole’s death but after reviewing evidence in the 24 hours since the attack, including CCTV footage and witness accounts of the incident, Acting Inspector Armitt said investigators now believed they had the two sole perpetrators of the attack.
Maxwell and Renata then fled the scene rather than trying to help, police claimed.
“It’s alleged his co-accused has come from behind or the side and that is the punch which has led to (Mr Miller) falling to the ground”, Mr Clements told the court.
Outside court, the accused’s lawyer Neil Lawler described the circumstances as a ” tragedy for all concerned”.
Chocking back tears as he spoke, Mr Miller said his son “passed away as a result of massive brain trauma”.
He was taken to Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
“Cole was a handsome, brave, young man with his whole life yet to be lived”.
He was a Queensland under-20s water polo player and the younger brother of Australian representative Billy Miller.
