Associated Press and British Movietone upload 1 million
The Associated Press and British Movietone are putting their extensive archives of newsreels on YouTube, ABC News reports.
The archival footage includes major world events such as the 1906 San Francisco quake, exclusive footage of the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941, the fall of the Berlin Wall and the 2001 terrorist attacks on the US Celeb footage includes Marilyn Monroe captured on film in London in the 1950s and Twiggy modelling fashions of the 1960s, as well as segments on Muhammad Ali, Charlie Chaplin, Salvador Dali, Brigitte Bardot and Elvis Presley. You can now catch all of that and much more on YouTube.
The AP sees the footage as a “view-on-demand visual encyclopedia”, available as an educational tour and a draw for history buffs and documentary filmmakers.
As of now, AP has roughly 550,000 videos on its YouTube channel, but this will change: according to an introductory video posted on its page, the multinational agency will continue to upload important news highlights of the day, as well as older historical footage.
This project is being done in partnership with British Movietone, one of the world’s largest archives of historical newsreel footage.
The Associated Press is teaming up with British Movietone to place their archive footage on YouTube. Or you can search each channel for a specific video by name or topic.
