Obama tears up speaking against gun violence, remembering Sandy Hook
During his remarks, the president became emotional, recalling the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School that look the lives of 20 school children and staff.
It was well short of the goal that U.S. Rep. Mike Thompson, the California Democrat who chairs the House gun control caucus, laid out to The New York Times: “There needs to be a law that says you buy a gun, you get a background check”.
That’s the Gun Control Act of 1968.
About a third of Americans live in a household where at least one person owns a gun.
President Barack Obama on Tuesday issued a renewed push for tighter gun control laws.
But the president says he wants to earmark $500 million to mental health care, “We’re gonna do more to help those suffering from mental health get the help that they need, so…”
The most controversial step would require all gun sellers, including those online and at gun shows, to be licensed and perform background checks on buyers.
Even before the announcement, many gun advocates threatened to challenge the provisions in court and many Republicans, particularly those on the campaign trail, blasted the move.
But he insisted his actions don’t violate the Constitutional right to bear arms. The licensing requirement will now be required of anyone who’s “in the business” of selling firearms.
“I don’t think that it’s going to decrease gun violence, because law abiding citizens will abide by the laws, criminals will never abide by the laws”, said Feehan.
Legal experts say the executive actions are legal, yet only meant modest improvements.
“I would rather go through somebody because I have no idea what their background is”.
He added that he didn’t see any dangers in the action either.
A Fox News host, Andrea Tantaros said on-air that she would check Obama’s podium for a raw onion, implying that his tears were fake and throwing herself into a Twitter fire storm.
“Well, every time Obama speaks we sell guns”.
This is often referred to as the “gun show loophole”. “The president’s decision to punish law-abiding Americans is nothing more than an ongoing diversion tactic used to draw attention away from his inability to keep Americans safe from terror attacks”.
In other words, it was a regular day on the campaign trail for them.
