Before Its Final Season, The Making Of Masterpiece’s ‘Downton Abbey’
If you accept “Downton Abbey” as an elegantly pulpy potboiler, exaggerated turns of fate are just part of keeping the teapot hot for more than 50 episodes.
The show’s executive producer Gareth Neame recently explained that the drama didn’t need to end. “His name will remain anonymous…”
PHYLLIS LOGAN: I think it would probably have to be honest. Inspired by the upstairs-downstairs world he created as the writer of the film Gosford Park, for which he won an Academy Award, Julian Fellowes acted as the series sole writer during its 52 episode run. Among the superb cast of “Downton Abbey”, a similarly towering figure is Jim Carter, who plays him.
Dame Maggie Smith has ruled herself out of returning for a Downton Abbey follow-up film.
And he owes it all to “Downton Abbey”. As Mary tries to apologize for a seriously cruel action, Edith tells her off. Will Lady Edith make a success of running a publishing company?
Has Tom Branson left Downton in his rear-view mirror? Will Carson and Mrs. Hughes finally make it down the aisle?
Naturally, I’m sworn to secrecy, otherwise Masterpiece will send Mr. Carson over to arch an eyebrow and give me a thorough scolding. “And Violet has her talons sharpened”. “At that point they weren’t sending out scripts or character descriptions”.
In person, the show’s stars were more intentionally amusing and far less buttoned-up than their “Downton” personas.
Ooh, that Mr. Carson. And at the end of the scene, after the cameras stopped rolling, then you then died. “But I was just delighted for the work”.
“We needed a whole series that was about resolution so we chose to do six, so it’s not as if we’re cutting ourselves short”, Fellowes told CNN. “Of course, it was Dan’s decision to leave”, Dockery said. Her pregnancy in an earlier season (which ended tragically) showed that there are more than just kind words in the relationship.
Elizabeth McGovern joked about what Lady Cora and Lord Grantham did and didn’t do in their many bedroom scenes when asked about what she’d miss most about the show. Thank Scottish poet Robert Burns who penned the ballad from a collected group of 1780s verses, remaking them into a song that those of us of a certain generation, less the young people these days, knows to be the bittersweet theme to the past.
Surprisingly there were no men chasing after Mary, begging her to marrying them in the episode. “Over my dead body!’ And I relish playing those moments”.
Over at the UK, Season 6 has become the most favorite season of the show since Season 3 because it was both heart-warming and sad, as well as serious and amusing too. Some extreme plotting has brought thoughtful explorations of rape, socialism, anti-Semitism, racism and the British class divide, between the transitional years of 1912 and 1925. I’m Kevin Doyle. I play Joseph Molesley. But Neame pointed out that Molesley “does have a nice conclusion … a lovely story line, a bit of a break”.
The Downton Abbey finale aired on Christmas Day and saw Lady Edith, portrayed by Laura Carmichael, finally find happiness as she tied the knot with her beau the Marquess of Hexham Bertie Pelham (Harry Hadden-Paton).
“Everything was positioned by the end of the last season”, he said of season five. But, he said, “none of us will be involved” in such a project.
“It is the top PBS drama of all time”, said Paula Kerger, the network’s president, “and one of the most-watched dramas on American television”. “Cause after 1926, there are tumultuous times ahead, aren’t there, in Britain?” This time they are fighting over the future of the local hospital.
Thank you Daisy for ruining Mr. Mason’s chances of getting his farm back.
