Samsung and MasterCard will let you order groceries straight from your fridge
It’s also fair to assume that the fridge will be able to log what’s in it and alert you when something is running low, like most other smart fridges.
The concept may sound completely bonkers, but if the products on show at CES this week are anything to go by, this could actually be a thing.
At the consumer tech industry’s yearly shindig in Las Vegas, the Consumer Electronics Show, Samsung rolled out a bunch of new gear, but the most interesting new device announced was a smart refrigerator that lets users shop for groceries from the kitchen.
For those unwilling to upgrade their fridge for IoT benefits, British firm Smarter released a fridge camera that takes periodic still photos of the fridge contents that can be accessed while out shopping.
“In a world where every device – from the phone to the refrigerator – is connected to the internet, the ways in which consumers interact and transact with their favourite brands are changing”, says Betty DeVita, chief commercial officer at MasterCard Labs. Samsung has integrated Nuance’s embedded voice technology that supports “far talking” capabilities to give consumers the ability to launch and engage with the Samsung Family Hub’s apps and services from anywhere in the room. It intends to make it easier for users to switch from a content service to another, as well as between devices.
Samsung’s Family Hub refrigerator is the electronics giant’s latest smart appliance. With the integration of apps, connectivity with your smartphone and cameras installed inside the fridge; users have the power to know whether they have a certain item to eat without even opening the doors.
So if you’re dying to be able to peer into your fridge from across town, the Smarter proposition might be a more realistic one in the short term. Samsung could not tell us how many microphones are in the fridge or if it will be as sensitive to the call of its name. This provides consumers the one tool they need to control their entire home entertainment system.
Samsung is pulling out all the stops when it comes to delivering on the smart home experience. They will come with customized bands and watch faces and will soon integrate with Samsung Pay so you can make payments with your watch.
