Twitter planning 10000 character limit for tweets
WASHINGTON-Twitter’s 140-character limit on tweets has long frustrated and challenged its most verbose users.
Twitter’s malaise resulted in the departure of Dick Costolo as the company’s CEO last July and ushered in the return of Dorsey, who had been ousted as the company’s leader in 2008.
Every now and again, we complain about Twitter‘s 140 characters or less limit. In an effort to keep tweets looking the same as they do now, Twitter is reportedly testing a method that would keep the number of characters displayed at one time to 140.
The 140-character limit has been around as long as Twitter has and has become part of the product’s personality. “And a sense of speed”, he said.
Those texting limits on phones faded away several years ago as the advent of smartphones enabled people to use other Internet messaging services, making Twitter’s restrictions look increasingly antiquated. “We’re continuing to explore ways to surface the best content for people using Twitter”, a company spokeswoman was quoted as saying. He said it would “never lose that feeling”.
Twitter has been experimenting under Mr Dorsey to make the service more engaging.
More revenue eventually could help Twitter turn a profit for the first time in its history. It had its slowest user growth in 2015 – it now boasts just over 300 million users – and was eclipsed by photo-sharing app Instagram, owned by Facebook Inc, which surpassed 400 million users past year. Such a feature would allow Twitter to compete with platforms like Medium, it seems. That’s the current limit for direct messages on the service, and it could be used to allow people to post blog-length missives, extended lists, and whatever else they please on the service.
Twitter’s share price now stands at $21, down from a peak of $69 in January 2014.
