Obama unveils actions to curb gun violence
President Obama made a statement earlier today to discuss his four-point executive action plan to combat gun violence in the United States. “If we had more individuals in place to process that application, maybe he would not have gotten that gun”, said Graham.
The president insisted that his proposed executive orders are “not a plot to take away everybody’s guns”, as the majority of Republicans claim, and is not an “infringement on the Second Amendment” of the U.S. Constitution that protects people’s right to bear arms.
The president also ordering background checks for online gun sales.
He also called on Congress to increase funding for mental healthcare, gun safety technology and hiring more background checkers and ATF agents.
On Thursday ahead of the president’s evening town hall on gun control, MetroFocus will examine how his proposed changes would affect residents of the tri-state region.
By limiting the scope of the background checks measure – the administration is clarifying what it means to be “engaged in the business” of selling firearms – it may have bolstered the measure’s legal defensibility at the expense of having a far-reaching impact.
“Every time I think about those kids it gets me madder”, Obama said.
But a sizable number of Oregonians disagree with the president, and argue that the answer to combating gun violence is having more responsible people armed.
“He wants to take guns off the street, he opens his mouth and there are 20 million more guns out there”, said Hancock. “We’ll be making sure that people have a very clear understanding of what can make a difference and what we can do”, Mr Obama said.
Obama says he can.
Potter says since I-594 went into effect, 5,300 private sale background checks have been done that wouldn’t have been accomplished otherwise. “So, tightening loopholes, covering loopholes, I think that’s fantastic because I always get back to guns should be owned by people who are qualified to do so”.
The announcement received predictably different reactions from presidential candidates.
“Rather than taking guns out of the hands of law-abiding citizens as Obama and (Hillary) Clinton would like to do, we should focus on keeping guns out of the hands of the terrorists who want to kill innocent Americans”, Bush wrote in Iowa’s Gazette newspaper.
Taylor says licensed gun stores, which already do background checks, have historically benefited from gun control discussions.
