Spurs sign guard Jimmer Fredette
Jimmer has only averaged 13.7 minutes a game over his career and is averaging 6.1 points on 41% shooting.
Such prospects usually sign after summer league or training camp, but the Spurs were apparently anxious to fend off any suitors after Simmons averaged 15.2 points, 4.3 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.0 steals while earning third-team All-Defense last season for the Austin Spurs. He’s bounced around from the Chicago Bulls, and the Pelicans in the last two seasons.
Feb 11, 2015; New Orleans, LA, U.S.; New Orleans Pelicans guard Jimmer Fredette (32) and Indiana Pacers forward Shayne Whittington (42) scramble for a loose ball during the second half of a game at the Smoothie King Center. Sports reported that Fredette is signing a training-camp deal with the Spurs.
The San Antonio Spurs made two roster moves today and one of them is a surprise.
San Antonio is a model franchise that has been a perennial playoff team.
Nonetheless if Fredette does not pan out, the Spurs could simply waive him.
After being selected No. 10 overall by the Sacramento Kings in the 2011 draft, Fredette has not lived up to his 28.9 ppg at BYU. That is an unacceptable mark for a player who many expected would make a career with his exceptional three-point shooting.
Leonard, meanwhile, has worked his way into a starring role in the Spurs’ system.
Last year, he averaged career-bests in several categories, including points (16.5), rebounds (7.2), assists (2.5) and steals (2.3).
Leonard also helped the Spurs win the National Basteball Association title in 2014, when San Antonio topped the LeBron James-led Miami Heat, and was named the Finals MVP.
