Sean Payton to Return as Saints HC: Latest Comments and Reaction
National Football League insider Ian Rapoport is reporting that Payton will remain the head coach for the Saints.
The Saints are coming off of back-to-back 7-9 seasons, though there is a little more optimism following this season’s losing mark because the team won 3 of its last 4 games. It’s a wise move for the Saints – the market for talented head coaching prospects is thin, outside of Chip Kelly – and a good one for Payton, who has guided the team to the playoffs in five of nine seasons. In Feb. 2014, the Cleveland Browns almost traded with the San Francisco 49ers for then-head coach Jim Harbaugh.
The high point was 2009 victory in Super Bowl XLIV. The Eagles could be interesting depending on their cap space over the next few seasons.
Even if New Orleans were to move Brees for a slew of future draft picks and give the franchise a reboot, who better to be in charge of it than Payton? “Each year is spent looking at our team, and are we on the right track….” He will have a clear picture about what the Saints will do with the quarterback when he sits down with General Manager Mickey Loomis.
If Payton wants to go, the Saints would be wise to get something out of this whole affair. The team hosted a press conference on Wednesday to announce the decision, marking he first time Payton has met the media since the Saints season-finale on Sunday.
