Drake committed an NCAA violation while at Kentucky’s Big Blue Madness
It’s no secret that Drake loves Kentucky basketball.
That has been surpassed by something that happened a couple hours later.
The letter, addressed to Aubrey Graham, Drake’s real name, was sent on April 27 in reference to his interactions with recruits at last year’s Big Blue Madness practice session on Friday, October 17, 2014.
Drake arrived at the event early and was advised that “NCAA rules prohibited the institution from arranging contact between him and the PSAs as this would be an NCAA violation”, according to Sporting News, which obtained the letter. Still, this probably isn’t a good sign for Drake’s future at United Kingdom events.
The level III violation Kentucky received is negligible and will not lead to further punishment, a fair outcome considering the encounter with Drake clearly had no impact on the recruitment of Matthews, Bragg and Zimmerman.
Kentucky coach John Calipari weighed in on Wednesday clarifying that Drake is still a part of the Kentucky squad and he hopes to see him soon.
The result? Little more than a amusing story and a letter that Drake probably never even saw.
Because Matthews had verbally committed to the Wildcats in February 2014 – some eight months before the Big Blue Madness event – Kentucky argued in the “mitigating circumstances” section of its correspondence that it was not considered a recruiting advantage.
Since the school reported the photo themselves, it won’t be a huge strike against them.
