Spurrier: Not too old to coach, will be around ‘a long time’
Ever since the end of the 2014 college football season, University of South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier has had to address his age and whether or not it was time to retire.
It’s always worth your time.
Steve Spurrier has a message for all those “enemies” out there, saying he will remain South Carolina’s coach for a long time.
Spurrier: Says media who don’t want to see #Gamecocks succeed are enemies.
Watson’s comments about South Carolina were a conversation he had with his high school coach from Gainesville.
Spurrier, at 70-years-old, has dealt all offseason with questions and criticisms about how much longer he planned to coach after the Gamecocks three-straight 11-win seasons turned into a hard 7-6 campaign in 2014.
“Now that we are 7-6, some of our enemies out there want to make you think Spurrier is getting old and can’t do it anymore”, he said.
While appearing on ESPN Radio’s Mike and Mike on Tuesday, Spurrier was asked to talk about domestic violence and he was his normal, candid self. “But now that we’re 7-6, we’ve got some enemies out there”.
“It’s a simple truth that the greater your accomplishments – your victories – the greater opposition, torment, and discouragement your enemies will throw in your path. Expect it and don’t become a victim of it”, Spurrier said, quoting Attila. “We finally won enough games”.
Spurrier said USC team physician Dr. Jeff Guy recently told him he was physically and mentally like a 55-year-old man.
Spurrier has gone 84-45 in 10 seasons with the Gamecocks.
“When you do it as long as I have, and you lose games the way we did this year, you have those thoughts that maybe it’s time to let somebody else come in here and do this”, Spurrier said.
Spurrier said that the idea of naming the field at Williams-Brice Stadium after him had been discussed by board of trustees, but that his response was to do it when he retired in five or six years. “Their quarterback has already challenged our guys. So we’re looking forward to that challenge also”.
“We’ve got a bunch of recruits coming in this weekend”.
Spurrier said he would not address the matter again in the future. “They need to know who the coaches are, and I certainly plan to be here with them”.
