Adele stays at No. 1 for final Billboard chart of 2015
Since its release on November 20, Adele’s “25 has sold more 7.44 million copies in the United States, and as we mentioned above, the album finishes the year as the top selling album of the year, along with the accolade of the biggest selling album since 2004”. Of course, Adele’s 25 greatly contributed to these numbers and Billboard reports there would have been a nine percent drop without her. 25 actually made up 3.1 percent of all album sales a year ago. However Usher released his album in March compared to Adele who released hers in November! If you were to theoretically pro-rate 25’s sales over 283 days, you would end up with a 25 sales number of 51.35 million. Of its total, it sold 307,000 actual albums.
Sheeran released x in June 2014 but it shot to the top of the charts again in July 2015 ahead of his sold-out Wembley Stadium shows. “I download it, and I buy a physical [copy] just to make up for the fact that someone else somewhere isn’t”, Adele said in an interview with Time Magazine. The singer failed to reach the top of the list of the biggest songs of 2015; she took sixth place with Hello. Twenty One Pilots’ “Blurryface”, which made its debut at No. 1 past year, re-enters the top 3 from last week’s No. 11 with 79,000 thanks in large part to discounts in the iTunes Store and the sales of its single “Stressed Out”. The album has ranked in the weekly top 40 since its release.
Next on this week’s Billboard 200, Justin Bieber’s “Purpose” keeps its position steady at No. 2 with 217,000. In addition it has also become the first album to spent at least five weeks in a row at the number one spot since the Frozen soundtrack in early 2104.
