In Kansas versus Oklahoma, college basketball wins
This was the second 1 vs. 2 matchup to go three overtimes. The second half was just as tight as the first.
Oklahoma and Kansas are the consensus top-ranked teams in the nation with the Sooners on top of the Coaches Poll and Jayhawks leading the AP voting.
Out of the break, it was the Sooners who extended their lead and seemed to be in control. The Jayhawks are just too good at home. It was a costly one also as a 1-point with a few seconds left in the half became a 4-point halftime lead for Oklahoma.
Oklahoma (12-1, 1-1) had plenty of chances to close this game out.
“When Forte went out, it changed things and it took them some time to adapt”, Drew said. Mason then batted away the ensuing Oklahoma inbound pass, stole the ball and sank a pair of free throws with less than eight seconds left to provide the game’s final margin.
The atmosphere: The crowd was still rocking at 11 p.m. Central time as the game spanned into a third overtime.
Hield then took the ball out of bounds, but Mason batted it with his left hand, then grabbed the ball with both hands and was fouled, hitting two free throws with 8.6 seconds to play and giving KU the three-point lead.
Kansas is No. 1, but Oklahoma is No. 2, or 1A, with a bullet. He’s never been a 40% three-point shooter in his career, so it’s possible that he will regress back to his average, but it’s also possible that with Oklahoma boasting more offensive threats this season, he is simply benefiting from better looks and will continue to shoot opponents out of the gym. Those who finished seasons with those marks were freshmen, Kansas State’s Michael Beasley in 2007-08 and Texas’ Kevin Durant in 2006-07…. (21 points) was fouled on a three-point try that busted a 94-94 tie.
The Sooners dropped to 12-1 on the season, while Kansas improved to 13-1.
But it didn’t happen during the four years he coached his alma mater, Kansas State, or during his previous four seasons with the Sooners.
In the end, it came down to the Jayhawks’ defence and one huge gamble that paid off.
Kansas (12-1, 1st) has been dominant since a 79-73 loss to Michigan State back in mid-November.
This left Oklahoma down 107-106 with only 11.9 seconds left and a conclusion finally seeming inevitable.
Cheick Diallo played 5 minutes and had a rebound and a foul.
Buddy Hield was an absolute monster for the Sooners.
GREENWOOD, Miss. – Ashley Beals had 20 points and 14 rebounds in 39 minutes to lift Mississippi Valley State (3-8, 1-0 SWAC) over Arkansas-Pine Bluff (3-9, 0-1). “Everybody on both sides made plays at the right time”.
Perry Ellis – who, yes, hasn’t graduated yet -was responsible for 27 points, 12 rebounds and three assists in the win Monday. Wayne Selden Jr. and Devonte Graham hit key shots, and Frank Mason III – limping through a bruised shin – picked Hield’s pocket twice to help seal the win. But after this? He went into Phog Allen Fieldhouse and torched the Jayhawks for 46 points, eight boards and seven assists on 13-for-23 shooting from the floor and 8-for-15 from beyond the arc on a night where the consensus (rightfully) was that Kansas played him well defensively.
