Colts foolishly give extensions to Pagano and Grigson
On Monday night, the Colts announced Pagano would return for the 2016 campaign with a four-year contract.
Pagano will be paired with general manager Ryan Grigson for four more years in Indianapolis, as Irsay also said Grigson was given a three-year extension so that he and Pagano are signed through 2019.
An 8-8 season was enough to save Chuck Pagano’s job, as the Indianapolis Colts gave their head coach a contract extension Monday night.
As of Sunday, it wasn’t believed that Alabama coach Nick Saban would be interested in becoming the head coach of the Colts. He said Pagano remained positive despite questions about the coach’s future.
Despite this year’s record Pagano still has one of the best winning percentage of active coaches. This year was tough, obviously-8-8 and falling short of the playoffs is difficult-but at the same time, we were right in there with the injuries we had at quarterback.
“Ryan and I met. Chuck and I met. Then Ryan and Chuck had a long meeting”, If they spoke about Pagano changing his philosophy that would be a good thing.
However, in a statement published on the Colts’ official website, the club made it abundantly clear why they have chose to stick with the current set-up for the foreseeable future.
“I’m convinced we have the right stuff on my right (Grigson) and my left (Pagano) going forward to win a world championship, ” Irsay said.
Now the Colts play a different kind of waiting game. Is that why he didn’t meet with Pagano and Grigson until yesterday? “We’ve been candid. We agreed to disagree but at the end of the day, leave every meeting with a handshake and a hug and you say, ‘Okay, look, it’s about one thing and one thing only”.
Irsay offered high praise to Grigson in a press conference announcing the news, via Gregg Doyel of the Indy Star, “Bill Polian’s gone to the Hall of Fame, and Ryan (Grigson) has outdone him through four years”. It is important. Chuck has earned the opportunity.
Tampa Bay drafted Freeman No. 17 overall in 2009 and he had three consecutive seasons passing for 3,000 or more yards, including a franchise-record 4,065 yards in 2012.
“Jim”, Pagano told Irsay, “I want to make sure I’m tied at the hip with Ryan”.
Luck is under contract until the end of the year and when asked if he would be willing to sign a long-term deal, the 26-year-old said: “Yeah that would be great”.
Something that Irsay said about Grigson, however, has piqued the interest of many, as it should. “But I think it was a great year in terms of a bunch of guys coming together, dealing with adversity and just never giving up”. Through this season, which has been trying and disappointing, he’s always been sort of a bastion of good coaching…
