Obama is the best gun salesman in America
Almost 50 applications were being processed at the same time President Obama was making his announcement expanding gun-buyer background checks.
Earlier in the day, Obama announced executive orders to expand background checks to cover more private sellers and expanded background checks to family and corporate trusts.
Calles said those who sell firearms at shows he organizes are federally licensed dealers and are already contending with federal restrictions on sales and statutes on background checks, and that closing the “gun show loophole” isn’t the right way to talk about gun control.
McGowan says, while it’s illegal for a person to buy a gun after having been involuntarily committed for emergency mental health treatment under the Baker Act, there are people who slip through the cracks. That’s due to legislative action in OR and a voter-approved initiative in Washington.
Enforcement: Improve the use of America’s existing gun laws, and add 200 new agents to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
Former Rep. Patrick Kennedy said President Obama “ought to issue an executive order on himself, because you see, the president of the United States is ignoring his own law” relating to mental health care.
“In the long run, it would be best for us to pass legislation, at the state or federal level, that requires background checks as a matter of statute”, he said, noting that the executive order may be susceptible to legal challenges or could be reversed under a new administration. The gun laws exist.
Obama, in his White House address, said there was no “slippery slope” towards eroding gun owners’ rights and confiscating guns.
The emphasis on gun issues marks a shift for Democrats, who have shied away from the subject in recent presidential elections, not only because of the NRA, but also due to competing views within the party. “Now we have to make sure we enforce them”.
Mr Obama’s 10-point plan to keep firearms from those who should not have them marked a concession by the president, as he will leave office without securing the tough control laws he has repeatedly implored Congress to pass.
“He thinks he (Obama) is addressing the problem of gun violence, he’s really not”.
He says the plan won’t stop all gun violence but he believes it will save lives.
“These things need to happen in Congress”, Lewis said. I mean, yes, we need more help in mental health issues, but we don’t want to connect the mentally ill or mental health issues with violence.
The proposed executive actions are ripe for abuse by the Obama administration, which has made no secret of its contempt for the Second Amendment.
Paul Ryan, the Republican speaker of the US House of Representatives, said Mr Obama was “undermining liberty” and being “dismissive” of the Second Amendment, which guarantees the right to bear arms.
