Soldier injured in stabbing attack at West Bank junction
Two young Israelis were charged Sunday in connection with a deadly arson attack in July on a Palestinian home in the West Bank, a case that Israeli leaders condemned as Jewish terrorism and that enraged Palestinians.
After months of investigations into Jewish extremists operating out of the West Bank, 21-year-old Amiram Ben-Uliel was indicted as the main suspect responsible for the Palestinian’s deaths.
Attorneys for the suspects said the authorities did not have enough evidence to convict their clients and accused the security establishment of using brutal and unorthodox investigation methods, including torturing the suspects and holding them for days without allowing them to meet with their legal counsels.
A 17-year-old, who remained unnamed under a gag order, was charged with being an accessory to committing a racially motivated murder.
Saad’s brother Naser was unconvinced by Israel’s commitment to the prosecution.
The arson case has been cited as a factor in a spate of attacks by Palestinians on Israelis across Israel and the occupied West Bank. “We oppose violence of all kinds”. We are against violence of any kind.
Netanyau said the indictments demonstrated the rule of law in Israel, telling his cabinet in broadcast remarks: “We oppose murder of all kinds”.
Tens of thousands of people attended funerals in the West Bank on Saturday for Palestinians killed in violence over the past few months during a period of near-daily Palestinian attacks against Israeli civilians and soldiers.
According to Israeli sources, the shooting assault took place in the city of Bethlehem on Tuesday when the Palestinian allegedly attacked an Israeli soldier at the Gush Etzion junction. The gunman, an Israeli Arab, is at large.
The targeted homes belonged to two men, both shot dead by security forces on October 13 after carrying out deadly attacks that left four Israelis dead.
In October 2015, Palestinian officials said the new files documenting alleged war crimes committed by Israel were submitted to the International Criminal Court (ICC), the only supranational judicial body mandated to impose personal responsibility on war criminals.
A police statement said Sunday’s indictments were the fruit of “the investment of many resources including technological means, initiative, innovation and creativity”.
