Results of Powerball drawing for $500M jackpot pending

The winning numbers for the estimated $524 million Powerball jackpot have been chosen – 47, 2, 63, 62, 11 and the Powerball of 17. A victor of the jackpot could claim a single pre-tax payout of $306 million.

Tickets for Wednesday’s Powerball drawing are available to purchase until 9:59 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 6.

NBC reports the jackpot is the largest Powerball prize since February 2015, when three people in North Carolina, Texas and Puerto Rico all drew the winning number. “They’ve won the $1 million dollar prize or $2 million dollar, 2nd prize”, said Jeff Cavender, Director of Marketing and Sales for Vermont Lottery.

“I never hardly ever buy a ticket, but when I see it that high”, Gretna resident Gladys Miller said.

Matching all six numbers earns the grand prize jackpot of $500 million, but is not multiplied with a power play.

But, for more infrequent players who are only drawn in with extreme jackpots, there is less of a science involved. The retailer selling a winning ticket would receive a bonus of $1 million.

That’s more than the average contribution from state lottery sales, which are mostly scratch-off tickets.

About 70 percent of past winners used Quick Picks, the computer system that spits out numbers, according to the official Powerball website.
