17 miners trapped underground at Cargill Salt Mine
Seventeen workers are stuck 900 feet below ground in an elevator shaft at the Cargill Salt Mine in Lansing, according to reports.
The Ithaca Fire Department said it was helping with the “major rescue” at the Cargill-operated salt mine in Lansing.
The miners were stuck in an elevator at a Cargill salt mine in Lansing, New York, according to Marcia Lynch, public information officer with Tompkins County’s emergency response department.
Klein said that once the crane arrives, it will lower down a basket to carry out miners 2-3 at a time.
The 17 miners have been trapped since around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday night in an access shaft around 775 feet underground. Efforts are focused on ensuring the integrity of the system and putting in place procedures to evacuate the people from the elevator.
