Man charged after train crashes into empty auto at level crossing
A man has been charged with obstructing the railway with intent to endanger safety after a train crashed into an empty vehicle at a level crossing near Burton-on-Trent in Staffordshire.
Emergency services have condemned the incident, claiming the crash could have derailed the train.
Midlands Air Ambulance was deployed, as were a paramedic area support officer, three doctors, the hazardous area response team and an ambulance.
Three crews and 39 passengers were checked for injuries but did not require further treatment.
“Thankfully, after they were seen by medics, all were discharged at the scene”. The 35-year-old was initially arrested on suspicion of obstructing the railway.
“Jonathan Mather of Pearl Close, Oakwood, Derby, appeared before Burton Magistrates Court this morning (Wednesday, 22 July). He is now in police custody”.
