Ted Cruz unveils new anti-immigrant ‘Invasion’ ad in New Hampshire
That’s why as GOP presidential candidate Ted Cruz is proving to be a formidable enemy ahead of the all-important Iowa primaries, the party’s front-runner is turning to an old tactic: Birtherism, or raising questions about Cruz’s birthplace.
Now, Trump is lobbing this absurdity against Republican rival Ted Cruz, telling the Washington Post on Tuesday that someone might challenge Cruz’s legitimacy to be president because he was born in Canada.
The Texan is portraying himself as tougher on illegal immigration than the NY billionaire, who has made immigration a central issue in his campaign. It is widely agreed that this satisfies the American constitution, which allows only “natural born” U.S. citizens to be president, but the scenario is untested.
Experts largely agree that Cruz, who was born an American citizen thanks to his mother’s nationality, is eligible to serve as president.
Cruz is set to continue the tour Wednesday with five more stops across deeply conservative northwest Iowa.

In 2013, Cruz reacted to the News’ story by vowing to shed his Canadian citizenship, which he successfully renounced as of May 14, 2014, the News reported in June 2014. Cruz was born in Canada, but was a USA citizen at birth because his mother was a US citizen. “But a lot of people are talking about it and I know that even some states are looking at it very strongly, the fact that he was born in Canada and he has had a double passport”.
“Mr. Cruz has gotten to this point by amassing an energized and growing coalition of Christian activists and anti-establishment Republicans, an extensive organization and a deep reservoir of money. The very first Congress defined the child of a US citizen born overseas as a natural-born citizen”. “You know, it hadn’t been a big discussion yet and I think this will begin the discussion of it. I am not enough of a legal scholar to say the court will decide one way or another”.
Cruz says the best response is to laugh off Trump’s comments, equating it to Trump’s campaign “jumping the shark”. John McCain, Mitt Romney’s father George Romney and former Arizona Sen.
Trump, who raised the issue of Cruz’s citizenship in an interview with The Washington Post a day earlier, warned that the Democratic nominee could file a lawsuit at Cruz if he’s nominated. Cruz has passed Trump in most polls.
