Mike Shanahan, Adam Gase top candidates for Dolphins head coach job
With the Dolphins setting up camp in New York and stacking interviews like a job fair, should they make room for former New York Giants coach Tom Coughlin?
The meeting will be his second with the team in about two weeks – Shanahan last interviewed with the Dolphins on December 22, also in NY.
Smith, 56, went 66-46 in seven seasons with the Falcons, reaching the playoffs four times.
Shanahan coached from 1995 to 2008 in Denver, where he had only two losing seasons and led the Broncos to Super Bowl titles in 1997 and 1998.
CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora reports the Dolphins will make a “strong, strong push” to land Bears OC Adam Gase as their head coach during his Thursday interview. Kelly led the Eagles to a 10-6 record in his first season, which was good enough to win the NFC East. However, Kelly’s coaching methods and his insistence of having complete control of personnel decisions did not equate to on-field success.
Shanahan is among a number of potential candidates the Dolphins reportedly are considering. He is a proven head coach that knows how to win, but is he a good fit for the Miami Dolphins?
The Dolphins fired Joe Philbin on October 5.
Marrone spent two years as Bills head coach in 2013 and 2014. He won the January 1999 Super Bowl in Miami Gardens, defeating Atlanta 34-19.
Grier has had interest from other GM-seeking clubs in the past, the New York Jets and Philadelphia Eagles among them.
The 49ers coaching search will likely take some time as Trent Baalke’s job as the 49ers General Manager essentially depends on picking the right head coach.
Austin would also fulfill the Rooney Rule which requires teams to interview at least one minority candidate for a coaching vacancy.
“One thing I told Dan Snyder was, ‘If you don’t plan on me being here for five years to do this the right way, then you shouldn’t hire Mike Shanahan”, Shanahan told The Washington Post a year later. Being a Dolphins fan I want a coach that can change the Dolphins and show significant improvement to the way the team is coached.
