‘The Force Awakens’ to take domestic box office title today
Disney said The Force Awakens had earned a total of $758.2 million domestically, putting it just shy of Avatar’s all-time US record of $760.5 million.
The global box office record still belongs to “Avatar”, however, with James Cameron’s blue heroes taking in $1.6 billion since the 2009 release.
It’s early days yet, though.
Avatar and The Force Awakens are the only two films to gross north of $700 million in North America. By that time, 2016 films like “Ride Along 2”, “Kung Fu Panda 3”, “Deadpool”, and “Zoolander 2” will release in January and February.
The film took opening weekend records in 18 other countries as well, including the U.K., Germany, Australia, and Russian Federation. But will it be enough to nudge TFA past the $2 billion marker?
As for when its box office might slow down, Disney has an ace up its sleeve-the trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. However, Star Wars has already reached $1.56 billion internationally from Tuesday’s values and is expected to exceed that of Avatar’s.
When adjusted to reflect inflation of ticket prices, however, The Force Awakens sits at Number 21 all time on the domestic list, according to Box Office Mojo. But Star Wars is beloved and people are happily going out to see it multiple times. Indeed, the biggest worldwide market that helped Avatar and similar blockbusters like Transformers: Age of Extinction so well in the past does not since an awakening in the Force until the film first bows in China this Saturday, Jan. 9.
“The Force Awakens”, the seventh film in the Lucasfilm space saga, has broken numerous records around the world since its release on the night of December 17.
