Cruz’s birth in Canada unlikely to cloud run for president
Having at one time declared Cruz’s birth in Canada a nonproblem, Trump now professes himself troubled by the question of his eligibility for the presidency.
“I understand that when the mainstream media covers immigration, it doesn’t often see it as an economic issue”, the Texas Republican senator says in the ad. “But I can tell you, it is a very personal economic issue”.
“What the American people are interested in is not bickering and back and forth”, Cruz told reporters before a town hall in Sioux Center that drew hundreds of people. McCain says Cruz might do well to get out ahead of this potential controversy.
Legally, it isn’t entirely settled because the Supreme Court has never weighed in on the matter, but two past GOP nominees, John McCain and Barry Goldwater, were also born outside the states to American parents, Scott, and neither of them faced any serious legal challenge. Just this morning, he tweeted it was a very wise move that Ted Cruz renounced his Canadian citizenship 18 months ago.
The comments mark a reversal for Trump, who in September downplayed Cruz’s birthplace in an interview with ABC. I don’t know to be honest.
The Field Poll released on Tuesday shows Cruz at 25 percent and Trump two points behind him, while Rubio received 13 percent. “The very first Congress defined the child of a US citizen born overseas as a natural-born citizen”.
Kelly explained that it was the citizenship of Cruz’s parents – or even just one parent – that determined whether or not he was a “natural born citizen”, and The Cato Institute backed her up on that claim. Cruz has said that because his mother is a citizen by birth, he is also one.
LLAMAS: Trump famously used the birther issue against President Obama, challenging him to prove he wasn’t born in Kenya.
Republican presidential hopeful Ted Cruz during a campaign stop in Oklahoma City, Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2015. The U.S. Constitution requires that presidents be “natural born citizens”, which Cruz is alleged to not be, since he was born in Canada.
Cruz has led Trump in the most recent batch of polling in Iowa.
Trump added: “I’d hate to see something like that get in his way”.
Cruz said, “Look the legal issue is straightforward”.
