Oculus is giving out free Kickstarter Edition Oculus Rift to initial backers
That’s been well and truly missed, but you have to wonder how much the Rift kit’s accessories have played a factor in the higher-than-expected pricing. Oculus says that 100 games will be available for the Rift by the end of 2016.
Preorders for the Oculus Rift have opened, and with them comes more information: the Rift will be shipping at some point in March, for $599.
Oculus has announced that it will be providing all original Kickstarter backers who pledged for the developer edition of the Oculus Rift back in 2012, with a new consumer edition of the VR headset. Pre-orderers will also get a copy of EVE: Valkyrie, a outer-space dogfight game that has also been a constant presence at Oculus’ demos over the years.
Westfield introduces world first Oculus Rift Virtual Reality headsets ahead of “Future Fashion” an immersive pop-up experience at Westfield London on March 12, 2015 in London, England. Oculus has partnered with select computer makers to bundle Rift-ready PC with the headset itself, with prices starting at $1500. Meanwhile, pre-orders for the Touch controller for the headset, which allows users to interact with their virtual sights and “pick up” virtual objects, are also being reserved with Rift pre-orders. Luckily, potential buyers can download a Rift compatibility tool from Oculus to check if their machine needs an upgrade.
Oculus founder Palmer Luckey will hold an AMA (Ask Me Anything) session about virtual reality on social-news site Reddit at 6 p.m. PT Wednesday. If you want to be one of the first to get your hands on the hardware, pre-orders are now available ahead of the official April release date. That’s in line with the price range for a headset and PC that Oculus executives had floated a year ago.
