‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ to become biggest film in USA history
Disney said The Force Awakens had earned a total of $758.2 million domestically, putting it just shy of Avatar’s all-time USA record of $760.5 million. Compare that to Avatar, which topped out at $750 million after a seven-month run, which began back in December of 2009.
At $1.56 billion in global earnings, “The Force Awakens” still has some work ahead on that scale to overtake “Avatar” ($2.79 billion) or another Cameron blockbuster, “Titanic” ($2.19 billion).
Star Wars: The Force Awakens has become the fourth highest grossing movie of all time.
“Avatar” still far outstrips it worldwide, with $2.788 billion total as opposed to $1.549 billion for “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” as of Tuesday.
J.J. Abrams movie Star Wars: The Force Awakens is officially the highest-grossing movie of all time in North America.
As for when its box office might slow down, Disney has an ace up its sleeve-the trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. However, Star Wars still has a long way to go until it crosses that milestone.
The worldwide record however still belongs to Avatar, though, and that may continue.
The leading markets other than North America (and before the numbers come in for China) are the United Kingdom ($148.7 million), Germany ($85.4 million), France ($71.5 million), Japan ($57.3 million) and Australia ($54.1 million).
Disney confirmed the record in a press release, but did not divulge the film’s exact box office as of Wednesday evening. Avatar closed after 238 days in theatres – Star Wars has been out for less than three weeks!
Original trilogy stars Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher reprised their Han Solo and Princess Leia roles alongside younger newcomers, including Daisey Ridley, John Boyega and Oscar Isaac.
