State Moves To Fire Bland Arresting Officer
An arrest warrant is out after a grand jury indicted a state trooper yesterday for perjury in the Sandra Bland case.
It appears that the Bland grand jury deliberations landed on a discrepancy between the trooper’s written reason for removing the Chicago native from her auto and the truth vividly displayed by his dashboard-camera video.
Present at Wednesday’s news conference, Jinaki Muhammad, national vice-co-chairwoman of women’s affair for the National Black United Front calls the indictment “a slap in the face to the Bland family”. He had been on desk duty since the incident past year.
The Associated Press reported last month grand jury members cleared any jailers of wrongdoing in her death. Video footage emerged showing Encinia drawing his stun gun and threatening Sandra Bland with the words, “I will light you up!” and “I’m going to drag you out!” The video shows Encinia dragging Bland from her auto and slamming her head on the ground, responding “good” when she warns him of her epilepsy.
He explained the grand jury didn’t believe Encinia’s statement that he took her from the auto she was driving so he could conduct a safer traffic investigation.
Hours after the indictment, the Texas Department of Public Safety announced that Encinia would be fired from his post, reports the New York Times. Ms. Bland, 28, who was black, was returning to Texas from IL, to take a job at Prairie View A&M University, her alma mater. According to The Texas Tribune, the DPS and Encinia are immune to a federal lawsuit under the 11th amendment.
Activists say Bland’s death is an example of racial bias in the American justice system. Reed-Veal claims her daughter was denied her constitutional rights and that contributed to her death.
She was found hanging in her jail cell, her death ruled a suicide. In this undated photo provided by the Bland family, Sandra Bland poses for a photo. Encinia said he then used force “to subdue Bland to the ground”, and that she continued to fight back. “It’s the secrecy of it all”. Bland was charged with assaulting an officer, a felony. In an interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper, Republican Donald Trump said that Encinia’s actions were “terrible” and “so aggressive”.
“A class A misdemeanor, I can’t be expected to be excited about that, because I feel there’s so much more that he should have been indicted on”. “It means protecting defendants’ constitutional rights by appointing counsel at the earliest stages and expanding and funding public defender offices”. “It could easily have been avoided”, she told the AP.
