Oculus Rift Virtual Reality Headset Priced at $599
Said smartphones are still far from cheap, but it’s hard to deny that Gear VR has a much lower all in cost than Oculus Rift. The company isn’t ready to commit to a firm price for the headset but compared the purchase to an investment by the customer.
After an excruciatingly long wait, the consumer version of the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset is now up for pre-order.
Oculus says that more than 20 games will be coming out for the Rift this year.
All pre-order will include a spot on the pre-order list for the Oculus Touch controller to be released in the latter part of 2016.
Oculus VR is now taking pre-orders for the Oculus Rift headset, but at $600 it’s about twice as expensive as many expected. But before you go out and order one, you might want to take a glimpse into your bank account first. The device is now available for pre-order at $599, and will be shipped across the globe at the end of March.
On the content side of the equation, preordered systems will come bundled with Lucky’s Tale by Playful and CCP’s EVE: Valkyrie.
Previous media reports had priced the Rift at $1,500 – its price including a high-end PC capable of processing the graphics. Gamers will get a wired headset, a camera that you’ll place on a desk or wall to help track your head movements, and a Microsoft Xbox One gamepad.
$599 sounds steep but experts have been predicting a high price point for the Rift’s commercial debut. According to Oculus VR founder Palmer Luckey, Oculus Rift is being sold at a loss, despite its bloated price tag.
