Eagles interview Giants offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo
Gase was the first of two candidates interviewed Wednesday by the Browns, who are in search of their eighth coach since 1999 after Mike Pettine was sacked Sunday following a season-ending loss to Pittsburgh.
With Tom Coughlin stepping down earlier this week, the New York Giants have begun their search for a new head coach.
Austin has emerged as one of the hot young coordinators in the 2016 coaching carousel. Before that, he served as a tight end and quarterback coach for the Packers.
At his first three pro stops, he coached in the Super Bowl, coaching defensive backs to Pro Bowl seasons along the way, including cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and safety Ed Reed.
The birds are still reported to interview both the Bengals Defensive Coordinator Paul Guenther and the Chiefs Offensive Coordinator Doug Pederson.
In front-office news, Giants director of college scouting Marc Ross interviewed with the Titans for their general manager’s job Thursday. He’s a good communicator and a coach that the players respect and play hard for. They also praise his consistency, adaptable game plans, and how he was able to hold the defense together despite a 1-7 start.
He led Detroit’s defense to a No. 2 ranking in 2014. In 2015, the Lions ranked 18th in the National Football League in total defense.
The team was scheduled to interview its own defensive coordinator, Steve Spagnuolo, and Lions defensive coordinator Teryl Austin, according to multiple reports. The Giants would be his first head coaching job after being an assistant or coordinator his entire coaching career, with just two years of being a coordinator in the NFL.
Austin’s interview will satisfy the NFL’s “Rooney Rule” requirement to speak with a minority candidate, but the 50-year-old has all the qualifications to take over a team. He has New York Giants Eli Manning full endorsement who wants to him to stay in New York.
What came next for Marino should worry Giants fans about a potential rebuild, even with a franchise quarterback.
McDaniels previously coached the Denver Broncos in 2009 and 2010, and while that didn’t work out, he could be ready for another head coaching opportunity at this point.
