Giants agree to terms on three-year deal with outfielder Denard Span
Alex Pavlovic of CSN Bay Area reported that Span’s deal is worth million.
His salaries will be the same annually, $10.33 million, and his contract includes performance bonuses. It is surprising that, despite playing in under 65 games last season, that the soon-to-be 32-year-old outfielder managed to get a three-year deal.
Span’s run before 2015 was an impressive one. 352 on-base percentage and a. 395 slugging.
He opened the season on the disabled list after recovering from core muscle surgery and was sidelined in September after a hip injury ended his season.
The oft-injured Span appeared in only 61 games for the Washington Nationals, where he batted.301/.365/.431 and drove in 22 runs. He was also a flawless 11-for-11 in stolen bases attempts.
His presence was missed too, as the Nationals missed the playoffs in a season they were expected by some to represent the National League in the World Series.
Span, 31, has played well in his last two seasons with the Washington Nationals. Now they secure Span in the outfield for the next three seasons.
The Giants signed Span to be the leadoff hitter and center fielder, which would shift Pagan, if healthy, into an everyday role in left.
One would assume that this will finish the offseason shopping for the San Francisco Giants.
If Span passes the physical later Thursday he will be officially introduced at a news conference on Friday. Their three free agent additions are guaranteed the vast majority of that (although Cueto can opt out after two years), and shortstop Brandon Crawford kicked off the winter by signing a $75 million extension.
