Oculus Rift Ready to Bring Virtual Reality to the Masses
We’re excited to announce that Rift is now available to pre-order for $599 Dollars on Oculus.com and it will ship to 20 countries starting March 28.
Users are reminded that the major requirement of having the VR headset is having a powerful gaming PC which Engadget notes would cost between US$500 and US$1,000.
Oculus founder Palmer Luckey faced a wave of questions from fans in a Reddit AMA earlier today, where he apologized for “poorly messaging” the price of the Oculus Rift. “Go go go”, he said. The headsets will cost a whopping $600, which is quite a bit more than Oculus VR’s initial promises (originally they said Oculus Rift would be in the $300-400 range). There must be a lot of lurkers in the VR community. Oculus said on Monday that the Rift, which comes bundled with the games “Lucky’s Tale” and “EVE: Valkyrie”, could be preordered from Wednesday. The assumption that the Oculus Rift would cost $349 was a misunderstanding.
After years of waiting, the Oculus Rift is finally ready to hit store shelves this year. The Oculus Rift costs $599 excluding tax and shipping.
In total, Oculus is promising games galore for Rift owners, with over 100 titles slated to be released for the headset by the end of the year, including heavy-hitters like Minecraft. But you need to wait for about a month as the pre-order of its bundles will start in February and the price will be from $1,499. Those six hundred bucks are on top of the costs of a PC capable of running current games; if you’re anxious about whether your computer can handle the technology, that pre-order page can scan your computer and let you know. Imagine enjoying a court side seat at a game, studying in a classroom of students and teachers all over the world or consulting with a doctor face-to-face – just by putting on goggles in your home.
