Ted Cruz: I’m sure I never owned a Canadian passport
Cruz made the connection Thursday afternoon when asked about the statement by another senator, John McCain, that he does not know if Cruz is eligible to become president.
Rubio himself distanced himself from McCain’s comments, calling it a nonissue.
On Twitter, the NY real estate mogul offered Cruz some “free legal advice”, suggesting he should settle the issue with a judgment from a court. “At the end of the day what the voters care about is who’s prepared to lead this country….” By saying things that go beyond the bounds of normal political discourse, he guarantees that the media (including us!) will cover his hot, outrage-inducing story and dance to his tune.
He called Trump’s attack a sign he’s pulling ahead of the billionaire developer, and McCain’s comments evidence of fear among the GOP establishment.
“Not everything in a presidential campaign can be accomplished with a speech or a rally”, said Matt Schlapp, chairman of the American Conservative Union, a grassroots conservative political group, and a former White House political director for President George W. Bush.
Trump says it could be “a big problem” and “very precarious” for the Republican Party if Cruz wins its nomination this summer. He is a natural-born citizen.
“It was a legitimate concern with Obama”.
But he was peppered with questions at a press conference Tuesday in Iowa. “If he’s not actually qualified then I wouldn’t vote for him”.
“He could say it’s a non-issue and hope it blows over”, he said. Cruz shot back this week that McCain’s position is created to help Cruz’s Republican rival Marco Rubio. John McCain, one of the Republican Party’s elder statesmen, told a talk radio host that he wasn’t sure if Cruz was eligible to be president.
In both law and politics, precedent is valuable.
After Donald Trump hint-hinted that it would be a yoooge mistake for Republicans to support a guy who WASN’T EVEN BORN HERE for president, and Ann Coulter twatted her constitutional expertise in agreement, Panamanian-born John McCain is taking a swing at his Senate colleague, whose guts he can’t stand, too.
Bob Vander Plaats, far left, a prominent pro-family advocate in Iowa, has joined U.S. Sen. “But a lot of people are talking about it and I know that even some states are looking at it very strongly, the fact that he was born in Canada and he has had a double passport”.
“If you come strong through Iowa in the top three or four, I think you really do have some momentum going on”, said Ken Anderson, a retiree and lifelong Republican who is still undecided. The Texas senator’s definition of a natural born citizen does have merit, with the Supreme Court having recognized British common law and the First Congress, that elaborated the definition of a natural born citizen to include “persons born overseas who are citizens from birth based on the citizenship of a parent”. It might mean that Cruz would have to BE elected president before his “natural-born” status could be challenged in court. Under terms of this legislation, as amended in 1952, if a child boasts only one parent with USA citizenship, that citizen parent must have lived at least 10 years on American soil, including at least five years above the age of 14.
