At long last, the retail build of the Oculus Rift is now available for pre-order on its official website. It also includes Oculus Remote, a new input device for navigating VR experiences and browsing content in the Oculus store.
Want the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset?
To use the headset, you’ll also need an Oculus-ready computer.
Starting in February, Oculus will let people preorder a Rift headset along with a PC that will work with it; these will start at $1,499. We also saw the Oculus Touch controller, which won’t be part of the first wave of Rifts to roll out to consumers.
Although it could be seen as an expensive system, Oculus head Palmer Luckey considers that the Ocolus Rift is actually pretty cheap for what it offers.
Oculus Rift headsets will officially cost $599, and they will begin shipping to buyers at the end of March, USA Today reports. Oculus mentioned that they are introducing more than 20 game titles for the Oculus Rift for this year, these include Edge of Nowhere and a VR version of Rock Band. Oculus, one of the biggest names in the game, is opening preorders of its highly anticipated virtual-reality headset this week. In 2014, Facebook bought the company for $2 billion. As has previously been noted, all pre-orders will come with “EVE: Valkyrie” and “Lucky’s Tale”. Note that neither PlayStation VR nor Vive have announced sales prices yet.
The Rift’s main competitor is the Samsung Gear VR, which is already on sale. Oculus Rift, the headset that first sparked interest in VR back in 2012 following a surprisingly successful Kickstarter campaign, has spent years under wraps.
