Jed York embarrassed with 49ers’ results but will keep GM Baalke
And though you probably thought about stabbing yourself in the eye with a fork many, many times, you somehow refrained. Coming in, Tomsula had no NFL head coaching experience, just a year in NFL Europe with the Rhein Fire in 2007. Then you refrained when Jim Tomsula was named as the new head coach/puppet. Whether that’s a draft pick, or whether that’s free agency, whether that’s a coaching hire. Kaepernick’s struggles forced Tomsula to pull him for Blaine Gabbert, a QB castoff from the Jacksonville Jaguars.
“I’m not going to make any decisions on players”, he said.
Jim Harbaugh acknowledged the rumors and never denied them. “I felt like the 49er hierarchy left me”.
Regardless, firing Tomsula will not save this team.
There were some questions about Trent Baalke’s future with the San Francisco 49ers, as well as his contract status, and we have some clarity. Because as it stands right now, this team is a laughing stock. “They had their team ready to play, all three phases”. It’s not fair to the legacy of the 49ers greats.
Unfortunately, Jed York has announced that Baalke will get at least one more year to prove his worth and Jed’s head is too far up his ass to recognize that he’s the most despised person in the Bay Area and is bad at his job. “And once we get those pieces together, then myself and the head coach and the rest of the staff can sit down and evaluate the roster and evaluate every player and determine who we’re moving forward with”.
That second sentence is probably the one that’s hard for York to swallow.
“So we have the ability to do some things this offseason that we haven’t been able to do (in previous offseasons)”, Baalke said. “But we didn’t feel like it was necessary to mess with it and create the possibility where we could damage the joint a little bit more”.
He took the road less travelled, followed his dream and attempted to make it in one of the toughest competitions in the world. But Jed York is not capable of getting us there. If the San Francisco 49ers do not pursue him, it seems likely that he will be a hot commodity for Power Five college football teams seeking a head coach.
“There was definitely a point where you walk down the halls – I wasn’t reading anything that was on the Internet, I was really focused on doing my job – but definitely walk down the halls and people look away or they look at you and you know something’s going on”.
“My family has owned this team since before I was born, and they’ll own this team after I am gone”.
But despite limited involvement, after the match Hayne was ecstatic as the 49ers pulled off an overtime victory. And York’s press conference this morning proves it’s going to remain that way. It s a 24-hour – literally a second-by-second – news cycle, and I can t do that. I wish I could find one positive note on which to end this final column of the season.
“I think it would be unfortunate if this was his last game”, safety Eric Reid said.
