Carlos Condit considering retirement after loss to Robbie Lawler at UFC 195
With 5 grueling rounds of fighting, both fighters were giving it all in what was dubbed as one of the best fights in the UFC. Little could they know, however, what was swirling through the 31-year-old challenger’s mind.
But as Alexander Gustafsson – a two-time title fight runner up – can attest, sometimes a championship effort isn’t enough to steal the title in the end.
“It’s not really an emotional thing”, Condit said.
The fight, as good as it was, may be most remembered for its controversy.
Steve Harvey didn’t come out and reverse the decision.
Both champion and challenger have spoken at length about the “fireworks”, now it’s time for UFC’s New Year celebration to begin.
It takes hard work, confidence, and hours upon hours to be able to work through the sweat and tears just to get there.
And Condit, whose massive edge in strike output to that point – he’d landed 114 significant blows to the champ’s 39 – might very well have prompted him to play it safe, he didn’t. The former heavyweight champion had no answer for Miocic’s power and push-forward style. I was all in. “If I didn’t, like I didn’t, I’d have to see if I can continue”.
But White also said that he’s not a judge.
Highlighting the UFC FIGHT PASS prelims, Dustin Poirier vs. Joe Duffy finally went down at UFC 195 after months of anticipation.
Condit thought he had done enough to win the belt.
Lawler was correct in that neither man lost, as Condit’s stock had to go up even in defeat. Every competitor put on a great show and gave us viewers our money’s worth, but it’s the main event that will linger in our memories and keep us talking for years to come. “There were two winners tonight”, he said afterward. He clearly earned Lawler’s never-ending respect.
For now both Woodley and Condit will have to wait considering Lawler is the champion and his health will ultimately determine the timing for any potential title fights. Lawler was among those who hung on to his title, winning a similarly grueling decision over Rory MacDonald in his only fight of 2015.
Lawler won the round and the fight.
Should the UFC look to book an immediate rematch? It’s not a position unfamiliar to Condit, who has been the underdog in several fights in the past but he’s never been afraid to defy the odds. “That’s always the plan, that’s how I train, I’m going to be sharp and ferocious and not get into wars”. However, most major media outlets scored it for Condit, according to.
If a fighter’s heart isn’t in it, he should retire.
The sport needs more athletes like him: Men who are thoughtful and wise outside the cage, and fierce and unrelenting inside of it. You can’t make these kinds of (decisions) right after the fight, you know?
If he puts it up to a vote, however, it would be a landslide of fans begging him to stay.
