“Affluenza” teen’s mom appears in Texas court
According to her attorneys, she has not violated Texas State law and eagerly awaits her trial.
Tonya Couch, the mom of the so-called “affluenza teen”, is back in Tarrant County, TX.
But Couch told the judge her belongings, including her passport, were taken by authorities before her arrival to Texas.
Weeks after she and her son went missing, sparking an global search, Tonya Couch is back where she started: Tarrant County, Texas.
Tonya Couch made an initial appearance in a Texas courtroom Friday on a charge of hindering the apprehension of a felon.
Tarrant County Sheriff Dee Anderson told reporters that Couch was cooperative during the trip to jail.
Couch is being held at an immigration detention center in Mexico City after winning a delay in deportation, a ruling that could lead to a drawn-out court process if a Mexican judge decides Couch has grounds to challenge his deportation based on arguments that kicking him out of Mexico would violate his rights. It is believed that she and her son, who was being sought for violating the terms of his probation, escaped from Texas. The two were detained by Mexican authorities last week. The whole world seems to have ridiculed him for his “affluenza” defense in the killing of four people while he was driving drunk. She was later driven away in a Tarrant County Sheriff’s van from where she was taken to the Tarrant County Jail.
Couch faces a charge of hindering the apprehension of a felon. Her arraignment is scheduled for Friday morning.
She and her son Ethan Couch disappeared in December, sparking an worldwide search.
The 38-year-old mother of “affluenza” teen Ethan Couch, 18, who had killed four people and injured several others, claims she has done nothing wrong. She was flown in from Los Angeles after being apprehended in Mexico last week.
It’s unclear when Tonya Couch would arrive in Texas.
Tonya Couch is due in court again on Monday for a second hearing on possible bail reduction.
He received only probation after a defense expert argued Couch had been coddled too much by his wealthy parents, a condition the expert called “affluenza”.
The woman was shifted to Texas yesterday from Los Angeles after being deported from Mexico.
“It is not a question of if he is coming back, it is a question of when he is coming back”, Anderson said.
Couch is held on a $1 million bond.
