Wayne Rogers, Trapper John on ‘MASH’ Dies at 82
Mash went on to run for a further 8 seasons, until 1983, with Mike Farrell replacing Rogers as Hawkeye’s new cohort, Captain BJ Hunnicut.
The popular and beloved actor was said to be surrounded by family and loved ones when he passed.
The actor is survived by his spouse, Amy, and his youngsters Bill and Laura from his first marriage to actress Mitzi McWhorter.
Later in his life, Rogers was chairman of Wayne M. Rogers & Co., an investment strategy firm; chief executive of the convenience store chain Stop-N-Save; and chairman of Kleinfeld Bridal, one of the world’s largest wedding dress vendors.
Trapper John’s departure was then referenced in the season four premiere.
In this photo provided by CBS, Wayne Rogers poses for a photo in his character of Trapper John McIntyre from the television series “M*A*S*H”, in an undated photo. “On the day we met we promised each other to give MASH everything we had, and that promise bonded us”.
Rogers was born in Birmingham, Alabama, and graduated from Princeton University with a degree in history.
‘Well, nobody defined an ‘immoral fashion, ‘ as it were – so it was at the whim of whoever ran the studio’. News of the character Henry Blake’s death was said to have been deliberately held back from the cast for effect. In addition, as former “M*A*S*H” writer Ken Levine notes, Rogers was “frustrated”, as Trapper John and Hawkeye were supposed to be equals, but Hawkeye proved more popular with the public.
Their characters were the chief antagonists of gung-ho Army majors and not-so-secret lovers “Hot Lips” Houlihan, played by Loretta Swit, and Frank Burns, played by Larry Linville. He died after struggling problems from pneumonia.
