Philly cop ambushed, shot 3 times while sitting in police car
The gunman is now in police custody and the badly injured officer is expected to survive.
A Philadelphia police officer was shot three times in arm while sitting in his patrol auto lat Thursday in what authorities are calling an ambush, reports said.
The officer, a veteran of five years on the force, returned fire and hit the suspect, who tried to flee on foot, but was quickly arrested. Police say the shooting happened just before midnight.
Police Commissioner Richard Ross – who was sworn in Tuesday – called the shooting an attempted execution.
Philadelphia police officer Jesse Hartnett, 33, was driving past the intersection of 60th and Spruce streets in West Philadelphia when a suspect walked toward the squad vehicle and opened fire, shooting 13 times, NBC reported.

Philly.com’s reporter spoke to Archer’s mother, Valerie Holliday, who said her son suffered head injuries from playing football and a moped accident.
“Fortunately, he’s awake. He was coherent”.
“This is absolutely one of the scariest things I’ve ever seen”, Ross said. Numerous bullets that did not strike the officer hit the driver’s side of the police cruiser.
Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney: “There are too many guns – too many guns on our streets and I think our national government needs to do something about that”. Hospital officials were not immediately able to provide detail on his condition on Friday.
