Chris Kyle’s Widow Challenges President Obama Over Gun Laws
The gun-control debate has become one of the most divisive and talked-about issues of the 2016 presidential campaign, in the wake of mass shootings in OR and California. “That I don’t end up to be one of these families, that I have the freedom to carry whatever weapon I feel I need”, she said at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia.
Kyle, 41, is the widow of the sniper Chris Kyle portrayed by Bradley Cooper in the 2014 blockbuster, Oscar-nominated drama American Sniper. And so I think part of it we have to recognize that we can not outlaw murder because people who are murdering, right, are – they’re breaking the law, but they also don’t have a moral code that we have. However, Kyle suggested her initial anti-gun position was an unsuccessful attempt “to deny the existence of evil”, and when her husband was murdered by a fellow soldier, she came to believe evil was real.
“Somebody else could say it’s a commonsense thing to have an armed guard add every school and another person might think that was overkill”, she said.
“I’d challenge the notion that the reason for that [rate] is because there’s more gun ownership”, the president said after hearing Taya’s argument.
Obama’s answer shifted toward some of the talking points we’ve heard throughout this week. I think it’s great. Specifically, numbers that indicate “the violent crime rate in the United States has gone down substantially in the last 20 years”. “Because if you look at the where the areas are with the highest gun ownership, those are the places that the crime hasn’t dropped down that much”, Obama said.
“During the town hall, Obama noted that he has never owned a firearm, TheBlaze reported”.
“Your message of hope is something I agree with”, she told President Barack Obama, but “the laws that we create don’t stop the horrific things from happening, right?”
Obama stuttered and rambled through a lengthy response that led him to talk about how his new executive actions to increase gun control aren’t ultimately helping catch criminals who purchase weapons illegally.
On the heels of her appearance, Kyle told Fox News that the effectiveness of more gun laws is limited, as thousands already are on the books, yet only a fraction of gun cases are prosecuted. Writing an Op-Ed for CNN, she provided a lengthier explanation for why she believes Obama’s gun control efforts are fatally flawed.
“I thought, ‘yes, that’s democracy, ‘” Kyle said Friday.
