Reed begins title defense at Kapalua with a 65

The field of the tournament in Kapalua, Hawaii, on the island of Maui, is limited to players who won events on tour a year ago.
Argentina’s Fabian Gomez, who hit a five-under-par 68, occupies sixth place on his own and trails Reed by three strokes. The difference was Reed converted on the final one.
“I didn’t think I could get it all the way to the green”, Reed said.

In ideal scoring conditions, Day didn’t make a birdie until the ninth hole but added another two coming home.
Spieth, the 2015 PGA Tour Player of the Year, continued the consistency he showed in his record-setting last year, shooting a seven-under 66.
Novocastrian Bowditch is three under after 14 holes, just three shots behind American leader Brandt Snedeker. It didn’t help him score.
The world’s top player Jordan Spieth is four under after 12 holes and is looming large.
Rose and Reed will join No. 1 Spieth, No. 3 Day, No. 4 Bubba Watson and No. 8 Johnson.
GAUTENG, South Africa (AP) – Jaco van Zyl shot a 7-under 65 at Glendower to top a South African-dominated leaderboard in the suspended first round of the South African Open.
It was the 36-year-old Van Zyl’s first round of golf without the assistance of knee braces since he underwent surgery to both knees in March 2014.
