Tamir Rice Supporters Protest for Change
“Everybody has this vision of a cold, callous person who shot a 12-year-old”, Henry Hilow said. “I don’t believe that every grand jury is racist”.
Still, prosecutors say the at least two people warned him about playing with the toy gun in a public place the day Tamir was shot. The most recent incident of this is the killing of 12-year-old Tamir Rice by Cleveland Police.
Jackson and Williams said the city was ready for protests, saying they welcomed them as a part of the healing process. “Talking to the adults who are familiar with the grand jury system in Cauhayoga County, there’s an old joke out that the grand jury will indict an ant for being an insect”.
Lexington, South Carolina (CNN)GOP presidential hopeful Jeb Bush, weighing in on the decision not to indict police officers in last year’s shooting of Tamir Rice, said a grand jury has made a decision and that “the process worked”. “That view influenced the presentation to the grand jury”, he said.
Mayor Frank Jackson said city officials have been meeting with neighborhood groups and clergy leaders in recent months. Rice either meant to hand over the gun or show the officers it was not real McGinty said ‘but there was no way for the officers to know that.’ The Airsoft replica of a.45-caliber semiautomatic handgun usually has an orange tip on it but Rice’s gun did not.
The caller said the gun might not be real and the perpetrator could be a juvenile.
In explaining the decision, Cuyahoga County prosecutor Tim McGinty said it was “indisputable” that the boy was drawing the pistol from his waistband when he was gunned down.
Frank Garmback, the training officer who drove the cruiser that day, and Timothy Loehmann, the officer who shot Tamir, might have acted differently if they’d been given that information, said Michael Maloney, Garmback’s attorney. It found that Tamir was not reaching for his waistband, and that the officers rolled up and shot Tamir so fast he had no time to hear or respond to any orders they gave.
The mayor and Cleveland’s police chief say they won’t question the reasoning behind the grand jury decision or why the prosecutor recommended no charges be brought.
A man called 911 that November afternoon to report that a “guy” was pulling a gun out of his trousers and was pointing it at people.
The family on Monday reiterated it’s request that the Department of Justice investigate Tamir’s death.
“That is not just something the family wants but it’s what the citizens of Cleveland need”, he said. Officers in both of those killings were cleared of criminal charges by grand juries. The Justice Department and FBI have been monitoring the investigation and will continue an independent review of Rice’s death a spokesman said.
