Planned Parenthood Just Proudly Shared Its Endorsement For This Presidential Candidate
Many Democrats are supporters of Planned Parenthood, including Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, who received the first endorsement from the organization in its 100-year existence.
It’s also an acknowledgement of Clinton’s stanch support for reproductive rights throughout her political career.
“We live in an era where access to birth control, abortion, and services at Planned Parenthood are under unprecedented attack”, the organization said in its endorsement.
Cecile Richards, Planned Parenthood’s president, explained the organization’s decision to go with Clinton thus: “Everything Planned Parenthood has believed in and fought for over the past 100 years is on the ballot”. The language – which Branstad said is similar to provisions adopted in other states – would not name Planned Parenthood but the effect would be to defund any abortion-services provider.
“Yesterday was a preview of what would happen under a Republican president”, Clinton wrote, citing House legislation passed Wednesday that would defund Planned Parenthood for one year.
The group, which has been under fire from Republicans after a number of controversies over its abortion practices, will formally endorse Clinton at a campaign event in New Hampshire on Sunday, Fox News confirmed.
Ironically, as reporters unveiled news of the presidential endorsement, Clinton took to Twitter to defend taxpayer funding for the embattled abotion company. Some of Clinton’s most famous public statements, including her oft-celebrated 1995 “women’s rights are human rights” speech, have centered on women’s health and reproductive justice.
This is the second national women’s health group to back Clinton.
The endorsement by the abortion giant is actually being made through Planned Parenthood’s “Action Fund”, which will spend at least $20 million during the election campaign.
“In Congress and on the campaign trail, Republicans that claim they just hate big government are only too happy to have government step in when it comes to women’s bodies and heath”, Clinton said at the New Hampshire Democratic Party’s Jefferson-Jackson Dinner in 2015.
A Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado was the site of a shooting that killed three people in 2015.
Clinton has always been noted for her support of pro-choice positions. While the 2016 presidential candidate once called the content of the recent videos exposing Planned Parenthood “disturbing”, she dismissed them as “misleadingly edited” to Dickerson.
