Mexican drug lord El Chapo recaptured after prison break
Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, the world’s most-wanted drug lord, was captured Friday six months after he tunneled his way out of a maximum security prison in Mexico. In July 2015, after he escaped a supposedly high-security Mexican prison via a mile-long tunnel under his cell shower, the Mexican attorney general’s office said it approved an order to send Guzman north of the border once he was back in custody.
His ability to sneak tons of cocaine, heroin and marijuana into the United States made him “Public Enemy Number One” in Chicago, a moniker that had been given to USA prohibition-era mafia boss Al Capone. “I want to inform Mexicans that Joaquin Guzman Loera has been arrested”, Pena Nieto wrote on Twitter, without elaborating.
“They are a pride to our nation”, he said, referring to the multi-agency operation in an address at the National Palace in Mexico City.
The Mexican drug lord known as “El Chapo” has been captured, Mexican officials said Friday.
Five people were killed and one marine was wounded in a shootout that occurred during an operation to capture the kingpin in the city of Los Mochis, in his home state of Sinaloa, an official told AP on condition of anonymity. It was reported by the Mexican Navy that they had to crack a few eggs to make an omelet; killing five assailants and arresting six others after an intense firefight.
Marines seized two armored vehicles, eight rifles, one handgun and a rocket-propelled grenade launcher at the home, the statement added.
Guzman escaped through a rectangular hole found underneath a shower of his prison cell, moving through a fully-ventilated tunnel equipped with electric lighting.
After fleeing the prison, Guzman traveled by land to the city of Queretaro, where officials say he caught a small plane to a mountainous region of Sinaloa, his home state and stronghold, Attorney General Arely Gomez has said.
“I don’t think Nieto would suffer the same embarrassment as last time, and that if (Guzman) wasn’t killed (during capture), he’d extradite him to the U.S.”, Braun said.
The kingpin’s legendary reputation in the Mexican underworld began to grow in 2001, when he staged his first jail break, bribing guards in a prison in western Mexico, before going on to dominate drug trafficking along much of the Rio Grande. “Careful and intensive intelligence work was carried out for months” leading up to the arrest, he said.
The man whose nickname means “Shorty” had used the money from a drug empire whose tentacles reach Europe and Asia to dig himself out of trouble.
Guzman is a wealthy drug lord.
According to CNN, Guzman started his career in the drug trade working for Miguel Angel Felix Gallardo in 2009.
The details of Guzman’s arrest were not immediately released.
The mustachioed drug lord married an 18-year-old beauty queen, Emma Coronel, in 2007 and is believed to have 10 children with various women.
His family has paid dearly for his life of crime.
