49ers post-season press conference
He remained on the sideline throughout most of the 49ers’ win over the Rams at Levi’s Stadium on Sunday, with the team opting to play DuJuan Harris, Kendall Gaskins and Mike Davis at running back and Bruce Ellington as punt returner. York says he’s received a lot of criticism from fans and he understands why.
As a result of Detroit’s victory over Chicago and the New York Giants’ loss to Philadelphia, the Rams’ opponents are set for the 2016 season.
Just a year after being hired as an NFL head coach, Jim Tomsula might be on his way out of the league.
“We want a leader, somebody that has a clear, strategic vision”, York said. Clarity and, well, leadership, just aren’t who they are. And York’s press conference this morning proves it’s going to remain that way.
York asserted that the 49ers will “spare no expense in getting the team back to its championship caliber”.
“My family has owned this team since before I was born, and they’ll own this team after I am gone”, he said.
Baalke has been with the team since 2005, rising through the ranks as a scout and player personnel executive before assuming the general manager’s post in 2011.
“Trent has the skill to do this and get this done”, York said. “And Trent knows that he and his staff are going to have all the resources available at their disposal to make sure that we get this job right”.
“You’re a coach”, Tomsula said.
It’s worth noting that the Cleveland Browns, who also have a head coach vacancy, have enlisted a national search firm to expand their vistas in pursuit of their next man. Other teams have done this in the past. However, it was not enough to save Tomsula as the 49ers announced less than two hours after the game that he had been sacked.
In the off season, the roster from the previous three years was a fraction of what it was.
“This isn’t a rebuild situation”, Baalke said. I have no one to blame but myself for that. The 49ers won 19-16 in overtime. Do I think Tomsula will be enshrined in Canton?
The St. Louis Rams haven’t finished.
With a blocked field goal in overtime and a missed one late in the third quarter, it was a rough end to a rough season for place-kicker Greg Zuerlein. This one said: “Jed – Here’s our banner”.
“Interactions with the media. How you think about that and those things is irrelevant”.
“It’s been recommended surgery and get confirmation on whether I’ll need surgery or not”, he said. Thank God you can’t see tweets that I haven’t sent.
Maybe it’s the way he repeatedly referred to Coach Tomsula as “Jimmy T” like he was an extra in Goodfellas once upon a time, or the way he refuses to admit his mistake with Harbaugh, but I don’t have confidence in his abilities to provide adequate resources for the team to exhibit championship caliber play.
Put on your tin-foil conspiracy hats now, because if it seems like Baalke has been given a mulligan after a few years of poor drafts and worse free-agency signings, maybe that’s because Tomsula was more York’s call than Baalke’s last winter. Good coaches and good rosters win Super Bowls. “His success at MI doesn’t surprise me at all”, York said.
“In terms of Jimmy T, we took a chance on somebody that we believe strongly in… and ultimately that didn’t work out”. And finally, when our franchise quarterback, Colin Kaepernick, showed he probably doesn’t have what it takes to be an elite player in the NFL after all, and was benched in favor of Blaine Gabbert (!!!), you chose to use the fork to eat your feelings instead; after all, just because the Niners suck doesn’t mean there isn’t actual entertaining football to watch. They want a team you can be proud of on Sundays.
