Mayor: Fire Devastates Harpers Ferry’s Commercial Area
HARPERS FERRY, W.Va. (AP) A fire has devastated the commercial area in the historic town of Harpers Ferry, destroying some buildings that were constructed in the 1800s.
Vaughn says the fire destroyed seven to eight businesses housed in one building.
“This is devastating for Harpers Ferry, one of the most historic towns in the U.S.”, Vaughn said.
Jefferson County West Virginia Fire and Rescue officials say the initial fire was reported at 3:15 a.m. near the intersection of High St and Shenandoah St.
Firefighters from Loudoun County, Virginia and Washington and Frederick counties in Maryland are helping West Virginia crews extinguish the fire.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office says Potomac Street is blocked.
No injuries have been reported at this time.
