Planned Parenthood to Endorse Hillary Clinton
Planned Parenthood announced on Thursday it will endorse Hillary Clinton for president-a choice that, while unsurprising, marks the first time the women’s health organization has endorsed a candidate in a presidential primary.
Planned Parenthood Action Fund, the Political Action Committee associated with the group, also spends millions on advertising each election cycle to help bolster the candidates they endorse.
Most of the Republican presidential candidates – including businesswoman Carly Fiorina, who famously called out the abortion provider for its unethical activities during a debate in September – have pushed for defunding the group.
Planned Parenthood Action Fund, the nonprofit’s advocacy arm, is making the endorsement.
Last year Clinton vigorously defended Planned Parenthood when it found itself accused by anti-abortion activists of selling fetal tissue to researchers. According to Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood: “Everything Planned Parenthood has believed in and fought for over the past 100 years is on the ballot”. “Health care for an entire generation is at stake”.
Planned Parenthood and its patients and advocates “are a crucial line of defense against the risky agenda being advanced by every Republican candidate for president”, Clinton said.
Clinton will officially accept the endorsement at a New Hampshire campaign event on Sunday.
This is the second national women’s health group to back Clinton.
As Senator, Hillary Clinton introduced 8 pieces of legislation with the clear goal of expanding and protecting women’s access to reproductive health care – more than any other presidential candidate.
In a September 20 interview with CBS’ Face the Nation moderator John Dickerson, Hillary Clinton revealed that she wouldn’t support a federal limit on abortion “at any state of pregnancy” in the name of a “woman’s right to choose”. The shooter – Robert Lewis Dear – said in court that he was “a warrior for the babies” and that he was “guilty”. And at campaign stops, she regularly invokes the work that Planned Parenthood does in her speeches.
