SIU investigating after police cruiser stolen following crash
“It was in that location where the vehicle was traveling the wrong way and went head-on into another vehicle”.
Police have a pair of people in jail after a cruiser equipped with the Automated Licence Plate Recognition camera alerted an officer that a vehicle passing by was stolen.
Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit is now investigating.
A pursuit began after the vehicle failed to stop for police, he said.
It began southbound on the 410 off-ramp to Highway 407 at around 7:30 p.m. when a vehicle was seen driving erratically.
The first vehicle was fleeing an OPP cruiser at the time. A seven-year-old and a three-year-old were also taken to hospital with minor injuries.
The SIU, which probes any serious injury or death involving cops, was notified of the collision and invoked its mandate.
Using the vehicle’s global positioning system, police were able to locate the stolen cruiser abandoned near Winston Churchill Boulevard and Eglinton Avenue in Mississauga. It says five investigators, two forensic investigators and a traffic reconstructionist have been assigned to the case.
He urged any witnesses who have not yet spoken to the SIU to call the police watchdog’s lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529, ext.
