Philadelphia police: Officer shot while in police cruiser
The officer was able to fire a few rounds, hitting the suspect in the buttocks.
Philadelphia Police Captain James Clark said the suspect, identified as Edward Archer, “stated that he pledges his allegiance to Islamic State, he follows Allah and that is the reason he was called upon to do this”.
A Philadelphia police officer who was ambushed execution-style while sitting in his marked police vehicle was in stable condition Friday with three gunshot wounds to his left arm, police officials said.
Ross says Archer also told investigators that he believed police defend laws that are contrary to Islam. He is expected to survive but will require multiple surgeries, police said Friday. “It wasn’t like laying it out completely, chapter and verse for us”.
“Why someone would do something so absolutely evil is just beyond us”, he said. “Where’s it going to lead us, if anywhere?'”
The 30-year-old from Yeadon, Pennsylvania, told police he pledged allegiance to Islamic State.
Shooting suspect Edward Archer.
In November, gunman and suicide bombers affiliated with Islamic State killed 130 people in a series of coordinated attacks in Paris.
Archer’s mother, however, reportedly told police that her son has mental health problems. He added the gun was a stolen police weapon. A law enforcement source said Friday that, so far, they had not found any record that Archer had contact with known terrorism suspects. He was firing the entire time, police said. The 33-year-old officer returned fire, hitting the gunman at least three times. Other officers chased Archer and apprehended him.
“We need more information”, Bender said.
Investigators are reviewing video footage taken of the incident from one of the city’s surveillance cameras.
In a statement, Gov. Tom Wolf said he’s thankful Hartnett is not facing life-threatening injuries.
“He was savvy enough to stop just short of implicating himself in a conspiracy”, said Mr Ross.
The FBI has been notified of the attack, but the agency Philadelphia Police Department remains the lead in the investigation.
Officer Hartnett is recovering at a Philly hospital. Hartnett is a graduate of Delaware County Community College, where he studied security and has served in the U.S. Coast Guard as well as working for Exelon Nuclear. This guy tried to execute the police officer.
